Always Lock Your Bike

The first and most important step you can take toward securing your bicycle is to be sure you keep it locked wherever you leave it unattended - even for a short amount of time. "Bike theft is a crime of opportunity," says Lt. Dave Hiller, of the Grosse Pointe Park Police Department. "If you don't lock up the bike, then go into the library or somewhere else for a minute, you'll come out to find out your bike's gone. Or if you leave the bike lying outside overnight and somebody sees it at one in the morning, it's gone."

It’s an unwelcome surprise that most bike thefts occur from the home or garage, so even if you are storing your bike on your own property it is still best to keep it securely locked.
