10 Ways to Encourage Biking

From elementary through high school, it's never a bad time to encourage kids to bike or walk to school. We understand that safe streets and adequate bike parking are essential, but extra encouragement has shown to boost the number of kids biking and walking to school. Here are some tips to help:

  1. Make sure that bikes are allowed at school. If not, find out why and see how that can be changed.
  2. Organize a walking school bus.
  3. Hold a Bike to School Day, week, or month.
  4. Have a bicycle parade.
  5. Allow teachers who commute by bike to bring the bicycle into the classroom for students to see.
  6. Integrate bicycle safety into your school's Physical Education Curriculum.
  7. Ask a local bike shop to come and give free bicycle and helmet inspections.
  8. Find out if your city or town has applied for federal SRTS funding.
  9. Provide information on how to safely and securely lock your bike.
  10. Start a lock loan program so students don't have to buy a lock.
