EXPAND YOUR PUBLIC OUTDOOR SPACE WITH THE DERO PARKLET
TAKING TO THE STREETS
Parklets provide the public a place to relax and take in the atmosphere of the city in places where urban parks are lacking or where the sidewalk is not spacious enough for a vibrant street scene. By providing a spot for the public to pause and enjoy city life, parklets bring energy to the streetscape and can increase foot traffic to local businesses. This guide shows you how to use the Dero Parklet to expand and beautify your public space safely and effectively.PARKLET PLACEMENT
LIVELY STREETS
Parklets are ideal additions to commercial corridors that have substantial foot traffic and low vehicle speeds. Cafe and restaurant owners in particular will benefit from expanding their outdoor seating space, but studies have shown that other nearby businesses also receive a boost in revenue when a parklet is placed nearby.
DON’T GET CORNERED
Placement of parklets relative to vehicle traffic is critical for ensuring the safety of its users. Avoid installations directly on street corners where the parklet would be exposed to traffic moving through the intersection. The National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) recommends a buffer of at least one parking space from corners.

PROVIDE A BUFFER
A proper buffer of 4 feet should also be maintained at each end of the parklet to protect it from parking vehicles. Add-on features such as wheel stops and vertical delineators enhance the visibility of parklets.
DON’T BLOCK UTILITIES
When choosing a site be sure to stay clear of access points for utilities such as manhole covers, hydrants, electrical boxes and telecommunications equipment.
TREATMENT IDEAS FOR A BETTER PARKLET
Your parklet structure is a blank canvas which you can accessorize to suit the flavor of your district or nearby business. It will become a focal point in the streetscape, so don’t waste the opportunity to highlight the character of the parklet’s surroundings.

ADD SEATING
Because parklets are designed to be welcoming places to gather and rest, most of them are furnished with seating options, and often include tables or other platforms to place items, especially when used for cafe service.

GO GREEN
One of the easiest ways to instantly add a touch of life to your parklet is through the use of greenery. Planters not only beautify your installation, they increase the separation between users and vehicle traffic on the street.

LIGHT ‘EM UP
String lights provide another very simple and inexpensive way to enhance the charm and visibility of your parklet especially in the evening hours.

ADD BIKE PARKING
Parklet installations also present a great opportunity to expand your local bike parking capacity through the use of on-street bike corrals. Up to a dozen bicycles can be parked in one standard car parking space.
